Day One

Check out of the hotel, move the luggage in, sign the lease papers, get trained on how to open the door (don't ask), and off to the Carrefour (hypermarket...it's either the next level beyond a Super Walmart, or it's because the million people in this cavernous space are hyper, jockeying for position...either definition is fitting. Here was today's story...
Our first trip was a mix of reconnaisance and sightseeing. Walking through the pet section
Kendall and Veronica were fascinated by the snakes, turtles, shrimp, frogs, crabs, fish and other (ahem) pets. Kendall figured it out herself after seeing the fish heads, squid, and other seafood on ice. The animal lover in her wanted to save a turtle from it's demise and keep it as a pet...
Investigating the shopping challenges we faced, we worked up a good appetite, and thought we'd start our Asian adventure with some of the local cuisine. Off to Concordia International School Shanghai to buy school uniforms for the girls, see their classrooms and finish the school registration. From school it was back to the hotel, load up the suitcases, and move into the apartment. After the real estate agents leave, and we're left all alone in the apartment, realization sets in...we're here...in a foreign country...barely able to speak the language... It's a good thing we're within walking distance to school, the hypermarket and know how to open our door! The adventure begins...

Sounds like a fun although a little bit stressful adventure. From here it looks like a vacation with the Pizza Hut in the background. I've been thinking of all of you and was so glad to see your post. If you can bring this up look at our (Keystone's) latest liter of service dog puppies. It's a webcam - ssdpuppycam.com.

Glad you survived the "pet" aisle at the market :) I'm guessing that's not part of the cuisine Holli and Kendall will be sampling? Glad you're all doing well.

I can hardly wait to visit and have Kendall show me the "pet" section of the market. I'm sure she'll find a way to save them all by then. It was great to talk to you and see for myself that you are all well and safe! I miss you much. Love, Mom/Nana

Hi this is Dennis, I see that you ate Pizza hut in China. How was it? Is it similar to eating chinese food in America? Your house replacement rang our doorbell when the boys were sleeping. She may have thought it was odd that I pulled the screen door window down to talk to her and never invited her in on the coldest day of the year. I was sure to grab the chocolate gifts she was bearing. Just kidding she is nice. Talk to you soon. Dennis

How soon until school starts? did it already start today? (this thinking 12ish hours ahead really strains my brains) Brian you need to whip that place into shape! Holli, go easy on the tea. Love you all!

School started, and the kids loved it. They're already making friends, singing songs they've learned, and taking Mandarin classes...Kendall has commented that she doesn't understand anything the teacher says, but we've encouraged her that because she's a kid, she'll pick it up quickly.
